I wanted to give everyone an update of what we have been working on in class. If you follow twitter (@NCaceros), you have noticed that we had a busy October; measuring pumpkins, exploring the insides of pumpkins and gourds, celebrating Halloween day, working outdoors. I am enjoying some personal PD, reading "Messy Maths" and "Dirty Teaching". We have begun to implement some of the ideas presented in the books and I look forward to continue bringing our learning outdoors, even during the winter months.
We have begun talking about hibernation and what animals do during the winter. Some hibernate, others remain active. We voted as a class to transform our dramatic play area into a hibernation cave. We will observe pictures of hibernation dens and decide what we need as a class to create our very own. If you have any brown pillows or stuffed animals of animals that hibernate (bears, skunks, groundhogs, snakes etc) that you would be willing to donate to our hibernation den, we would really appreciate any contributions. We will also be reviewing colours in French in the next month. I have posted a "Les couleurs" song and a hibernation video under the "songs" tab for you to view with your child at home. This month we have started learning about popcorn words! A note was sent home in the note tote regarding the words we are learning each month. These words are called popcorn words because they keep popping up! Learning these words will help your child learn to read as they are words we often find in starter readers. Please find some time to practice these words, with your child. (Putting them on flash cards would be a great idea!) Please contact us if you did not receive the note with the words or need another copy. Inquiry Based Learning We are currently wondering about the world around us. We were inspired by the travels of our teachers during Christmas break and have been particularly interested in Pakistan. We loved learning about hand painted pottery and learned where it is on a world map. If you have any globes, world maps, books about different countries or world travel keepsakes please feel free to send them in to compliment our inquiry. We learn through exploring. If you need your materials returned/kept safe please write us in the note. Thanks so much! Reminders:
Thank you for your ongoing support ! Team BlueJay Bonne et heureuse année!! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday. We have had a great first week back, everyone seems well rested and ready to learn! I invite you to see our "Songs" tab for winter French songs. I would also like to extend an invitation to anyone who would like to volunteer in the classroom to let me know through your child's note tote. We can always use volunteers to work one on one with the students in the areas of Math and Literacy. Please note your prefered day and time and we will get back to you. If you prefer to help from home, we would also love volunteers to make playdough for our class. You can communicate with us through the note tote if making playdough would be of interest to you.
